Works published at one's own expense as well as printed by publishing houses may be submitted limited editions.
The Walter-Tiemann-Award was first presented at 1992 and since than has been awarded every other year. This award primarily recognizes the design achievements of typographers and illustrators. The art contest addresses those, who outside the established publishing houses create room for innovations and enthusiastically carry through their ideas of artwork. By means of dealing with possibilities of text and picture mediation using electronic media new approaches for artistic work on books arises. Stripped of the function of being a straight knowledge provider, more creative ways open up which enable you to consciously examine the specifics of this medium. In principal only high quality texts should form the basis of the composition. In doing so it's secondary if it's based on belletristic or ideas, which reflect current thinking. The typographic form is essential; whereas handwritten originals are excluded. The incorporation of drawings, photos and other illustrations are judged by its book-specific benefit, which certainly can be understood in terms of association enhancement. All types of typography are permitted. The quality of paper, print and bookbinding is all taken into account for assessment.
The Walter-Tiemann-Award is an internationally announced prize. The financing of it is done entirely through contributions. The association for promotion of visual arts sponsors the award and invites a jury of selected experts including the latest award winner.
The aim is to buy all prize-winning books for the library of the association, which provides for exhibitions as well as for individual studies.
Walter Tiemann (1876-1951) Walter Tiemann was born in Delitzsch near Leipzig and studied painting in Leipzig and Paris.
He published works in critical support of the book medium already as early as 1901, subsequently evolving from an illustrator to a book and type designer. He worked primarily for the publishing houses Insel Verlag and Fischer Verlag. Tiemann's numerous type designs were cut and published by the Karl Klingspor type foundry in Offenbach.
In 1907, together with Carl Ernst Poeschel, Tiemann founded the 'Janus Press', the first private press in Germany, modelled on British presses. Already in 1903, Walter Tiemann had been appointed as a professor at the Royal Academy of Graphic Art and Book Craft (now Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst). One of his most reputed students was Jan Tschichold, one of the most signi?cant 20th century exponents of modern typography.
Under Walter Tiemann's direction from 1920 until 1941, the Leipzig Academy gained a world wide reputation as an institution specialising in book art. After the end of World War II, he brie?y directed the Academy again, propagating, during the remaining years of his life, a style of bookmaking that continued the great traditions of the past.

Anlässlich der Leipziger Buchmesse 2010
Der Verein zur Förderung von Grafik und Buchkunst an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig schreibt zum zehnten Mal den internationalen ›Walter-Tiemann-Preis‹ aus.
Mit dem ›Walter-Tiemann-Preis‹ werden künstlerisch gestaltete Werke ausgezeichnet, die in der Regel als Buch produziert wurden und in limitierten Auflagen erschienen sind. Zugelassen sind ausschließlich typografisch bearbeitete Texte. Illustrationen können in sämtlichen grafischen Techniken ausgeführt sein. Innovative Gestaltungsideen, die in inhaltlichem Bezug zum Text stehen, sind ausdrücklich erwünscht. Berücksichtigt werden sowohl Arbeiten, die im Eigenverlag erschienen sind als auch Verlagserzeugnisse in limitierten Auflagen.

Vergeben werden:
HAUPTPREIS Euro 5.000
FÖRDERPREIS
für Bewerber/innen bis zum Alter von 35 Jahren Euro 1.500
Der Hauptpreis kann aufgeteilt werden.
Die Preisvergabe erfolgt durch eine Fachjury.
Die Entscheidung der Jury ist nicht anfechtbar.
EINSENDEREGELUNGEN
Alle Bewerber/innen können bis zu drei Titel, die nicht vor dem 1. Januar 2008 erschienen sind, einreichen. Reihen gelten dabei als ein Titel.
Die Arbeiten müssen bis spätestens 30. November 2009 beim Veranstalter eingetroffen sein. Eine Haftung bei Transportschäden auf den Versandwegen wird grundsätzlich nicht übernommen.
Es wird eine Teilnahmegebühr von 30,– Euro je Bewerber/in erhoben, für Studierende 20,– Euro. Eine Zahlungsauf-
forderung erhalten Sie mit der Empfangsbestätigung Ihres Wettbewerbsbeitrages.
Eine kurze inhaltliche Zusammenfassung des gestalteten Textes ist in deutscher oder englischer Sprache der Bewerbung beizulegen.
