Constructing the Future Library
- Temporary and Distributed Approaches
In this post-digital age, digital technology is no longer a revolutionary phenomenon but a normal part of everyday life. The mutation of music and film into bits and bytes, downloads and streams is now taken for granted. However, for the world of book and magazine publishing, this transformation has only just begun.
How can the central role of the library morph into a still undefined new type of cultural body influenced through the creation of different types of DIY libraries eventually interconnecting into the centralised library system? Two of the possible approaches to start this process of opening and socialising the system of libraries are to create “temporary libraries”, in order to fill specific knowledge needs during events and after, and “distributed libraries”, so as to integrate specialised knowledge into the traditional library system without structurally intervening in it.

Mein erstes Spurenbuch

Bernhard Cella is interested in the economic and sculptural framework in which artists’ books – highly informed objects in themselves – can be used as artistic materials. To this end, he conceptualized the ’Salon für Kunstbuch’, a life-size model of a bookshop, in his studio in Vienna. Since 2007, more than 14.000 artists' books have accumulated and entered into unfamiliar vicinities and dialogues. Buying and selling these objects become an integral part of an original artistic practice.
