Im Kontext der dreimonatigen Ausstellung “Drawing from the Future” (1.

Drawing from the Future – Five studio talks

Guests at the Salon: Linda Bilda, Sevda Chkoutova, Nikolaus Gansterer, Moussa Kone, and Hoa Luo

Taking a journey with a pencil, thinking with your hand, capturing the perspective of a sculptural form in a few strokes and lines—the art of drawing is not only one of the earliest, but also the most inventive playing fields within the fine arts.
How does the process of discovering motifs occur in current media environments? What influences do printing techniques such as print-on-demand, risograph, and digital printing have on artistic production in the field of drawing? And what is the strategic role of publishing and distributing on paper?
Within the framework of the three-month-long exhibition “Drawing from the Future” (March 1—May 31, 2017) will be several events where publishers, distributors of small editions, and artists present their productions and negotiate the current complex relations between drawing and the medium of the book.
The exhibition features seventy-five contemporary drawings by both international and local artists. Each month, a group of twenty-five drawings will be presented anonymously and in book formats ranging from A3 to A5. Most of the works were borrowed from the inventory of “Anonyme Zeichner,” an art project by the Berlin-based artist Anke Becker. Since 2006, in public calls, Becker has invited her colleagues to submit their new works. From them, she arranges non-hierarchical sales installations, thus undermining the usual rules of the art market and leading them ad absurdum. All drawings are available for purchase at the Salon für Kunstbuch for a set price of € 200 each.

Hoa Luo, born 1987 in Ho Chi Minh City, is a fine artist. She studied physics, philosophy and fine arts at Humboldt University, at the University of Vienna, and at the Academy of fine Arts.
Hoa Luo’s art book, the large-sized zine youpuke – war is forever, self-published in 2016, is conceptualized as an archive: 1000 pages about the inscription of war in the era of mass communication and information. It is a female odyssey featuring the weaving of Michel Serres’ net of communication, Penelope and the resulting questions about the web, the codes, about destruction and the analogue. She is interested in structures of networking and transdisciplinarity connecting magic and ghosts and lives between images, sounds, text, cities, the sea, and many animals.

Moussa Kone lives and draws in Vienna. Recent exhibitions took place at ACFNY, Charim Galerie, Galerie Georg Kargl, Essl Museum, Galerie im Taxispalais, and CUC Berlin. Art projects include a cooperation with Erwin Uhrmann (Art Critics Award) and the publication of artist’s books. Kone has been granted the New York Residency and the Award for Fine Art of Lower Austria, and is a board member of the Susanne Wenger foundation.
“For me, drawing with pen and ink is related to writing. The term text is derived from the Latin word texere, literally weaving or braiding. Paper is occupied and the ink concentrates in hatchings, an image emerges in front of the inner eye. Meanwhile, a space for thoughts opens in the emptiness of the sheet. The line has the power to define; it traces borders, separates left and right, up and down. Hierarchies emerge, values, relationships and social classifications become visible” (Moussa Kone) www.moussakone.com

Linda Bilda is an artist and inventor living and working in Vienna and Paris.
She is currently developing the comics project “The Golden World” which will be published with Editions Rackham, Paris in 2017. She received the Outstanding Artist Award of the Federal Ministry for Art and Culture in 2011 and holds two patents in the field of architecture.
Sevda Chkoutova was born in 1978 in Sofia (Bulgaria). After finishing a high school for applied arts in Sofia, she studied contextual painting with Sue Williams and Adi Rosenblum at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. After a stay in Chicago (IL) from 2004 to 2005, she lives and works in Vienna today.
“…Her large-size drawings in graphite and coal primarily impress due to the technical virtuosity, the almost limitless possibilities of the line, and the modelling of shades of color by letting the white foundation shine through. Then, there are the vexing details as well as the backgrounds, which stand on their own as independent works and often contrast the sharply lit figures; they intuitively form membranes that partially merge with the actors…” (Monika Knofler, basis wien 2010, edition 4)
Nikolaus Gansterer is an artist deeply interested in the links between drawing, thinking and action. His practice is grounded in a trans-medial and trans-disciplinary approach, underpinned by conceptual discourse in the context of performative visualization and cartographic representations.
Gansterer is author of the book “Drawing a Hypothesis - Figures of Thought”, 2011 and co-author of the book “Choreo-graphic Figures: Deviations from the Line”, 2017, on the complex character of diagrammatic and embodied configurations. Currently he is Guest Professor at the Zentrum Fokus Forschung at the University of Applied Art in Vienna and is internationally active with performances, exhibitions and lecturing. www.gansterer.org

Bernhard Cella is interested in the economic and sculptural framework in which artists’ books – highly informed objects in themselves – can be used as artistic materials. To this end, he conceptualized the ’Salon für Kunstbuch’, a life-size model of a bookshop, in his studio in Vienna. Since 2007, more than 14.000 artists' books have accumulated and entered into unfamiliar vicinities and dialogues. www.salon-fuer-kunstbuch.at www.cella.at http://collectingbooks.cella.at no-isbn.net
