Jonas Mekas (b. 1922) is a legendary filmmaker, writer, and poet, and co-founder of Anthology Film Archives in New York. For Scrapbook of the Sixties Spector Books has compiled an assembly of Mekas’s published and unpublished texts, revealing him as a thoughtful diarist and an unparalleled chronicler of the day.

Mekas was born in Lithuania, and after being imprisoned in Germany, he came to Brooklyn in 1949 where he began shooting his first films. Mekas developed a form of film diary in which he recorded his daily observations. He became the barometer of the New York art scene and a pioneer of American avant-garde cinema. Starting in 1958, he published his legendary weekly “Movie Journal” column in the Village Voice, writing on a range of subjects that were by no means restricted to the world of film. He conducted numerous interviews with artists like Andy Warhol, Susan Sontag, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Erick Hawkins, and Nam June Paik.

Bernhard Cella is interested in the economic and sculptural framework in which artists’ books – highly informed objects in themselves – can be used as artistic materials. To this end, he conceptualized the ’Salon für Kunstbuch’, a life-size model of a bookshop, in his studio in Vienna. Since 2007, more than 10.000 artists' books have accumulated and entered into unfamiliar vicinities and dialogues. Buying and selling these objects become an integral part of an original artistic practice.
